Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding. It’s not just another box to tick. It’s the place where you’ll say your vows, celebrate with your favourite people, and create memories you’ll look back on for years to come.
The truth is, choosing a venue is often where your head and your heart quietly go to war.
One minute you’re falling in love with a beautiful staircase or an incredible view. The next, you’re calculating guest numbers, checking budgets, and wondering whether you can really justify that extra cost.
As Northern Ireland wedding photographers and videographers, we’ve seen couples spend months and sometimes years searching for the right place. In fact, it took us seven years to find our own wedding venue. Seven years of almosts, maybes, and “it’s beautiful, but…” moments.
What we learned is that there isn’t one perfect venue. There’s only the venue that’s perfect for you.
So if you’re beginning your search, here are a few tips to help you find it.
1. Trust Your First Feeling
Sometimes you walk into a venue and just know.
You can suddenly picture your ceremony, imagine your guests laughing over drinks, and see yourselves dancing the night away. That feeling matters. While practicalities are important, don’t ignore your gut instinct. If a place makes you feel something special, it’s worth paying attention to.

2. Think About Your Guest List
It’s easy to fall in love with a venue before you’ve worked out your numbers.
A venue that’s too small can feel cramped, while one that’s too large can feel empty. Having a rough idea of your guest count early on will help narrow down your options and save you a lot of time.
3. Be Honest About Your Budget
Wedding venues often come with extra costs you may not have considered at first.
Ask about everything. Are tables and chairs included? Is there a corkage fee? Do you need to hire additional décor? Are there accommodation requirements? Understanding the full picture from the beginning will help you avoid surprises later on.
4. Think About the Style of Wedding You Want
Close your eyes and picture your wedding day.
Do you imagine a relaxed garden celebration, a grand country house, a modern city wedding, or a cosy, candlelit celebration? The venue sets the tone for your entire day, so choose somewhere that feels like you as a couple.

5. Consider Your Photography and Videography
This is a big one and something couples don’t always think about straight away. The look and feel of your venue has a huge impact on your wedding photos and films.
If you’ve always dreamed of light, airy, romantic images, then choosing a bright venue with lots of natural light and open spaces will help create exactly that.
If you’re drawn to moodier, cinematic imagery, then venues with darker interiors, dramatic architecture, candlelight, and rich textures can create a completely different feel.
Neither is right or wrong. It’s simply about understanding that your venue plays a massive role in the final look of your photographs and films. When you’re browsing wedding galleries, pay attention to the types of venues you’re naturally drawn to. Chances are, you’re falling in love with both the venue and the style of imagery it creates.
6. Think About the Flow of the Day
A beautiful venue is wonderful, but it also needs to work.
Consider where your guests will move throughout the day. Is there somewhere for drinks if it rains? Are there spaces that allow people to relax and mingle? Does the venue feel comfortable for a full day of celebrations?
The best venues don’t just look good. They make the day feel effortless.
7. Imagine Your Favourite People There
This is often the deciding factor. Can you picture your grandparents sitting in that ceremony space? Your friends on the dance floor? Your family gathered around for speeches?
The right venue isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about creating a place where your people can come together and celebrate your story.

There Is No Perfect Formula
Choosing your wedding venue isn’t about finding the most expensive place or the most Instagrammable one. It’s about finding somewhere that feels right and works for your day, your budget, your guests, and the memories you want to create. Eventually, there comes a quiet moment where everything starts to align. Your heart softens and your head finally agrees.
That’s the place.
And when you find it, after all the back and forth, it feels even more special because you know exactly what it took to get there.
